[...] I’m hardly an isolated example. Mine is an increasingly common reaction. Earlier this year, there was a conference called Inside the Missional Matrix. All of the featured speakers make excellent points and I believe it was in one of these that Scot makes the comment I referenced above and says some things similar to what I’ve said here. However, it is Interview with a Missional Minded Atheist which I particularly want to reference. The whole thing is very much worth hearing, but there is one segment that immediately caught my attention. It’s toward the end of the interview. The atheist being interviewed, because she was curious, attended a Lutheran course on the basics of the faith. And one of the questions was about which lesson bothered her the most. What was the low point? And it was the lesson on sin. In it, the pastor went on and on about how sinful people are, how they sin all the time, how they are born inclined to sin, and all the rest. And she not only didn’t believe that, but found it overtly manipulative and was surprised to see all the other attendees nodding their heads in agreement. And finally when it gets to Jesus paying for it all on the cross, she felt joy. But it was the sort of joy you would feel at finding a really good discount on something. It felt cheap. Warmly,
